Cinematographer Zak Mulligan, an Ohio native, started his career in New York after studying photography at Arizona State University.  He is known for his naturalistic lighting style, seamlessly blending subtext with realism. The cinematographer's latest narrative feature Obselidia premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival in the Dramatic Film Competition where he was honored with the Excellence in Cinematography award for his work.  Obselidia also took home the Alfred B. Sloan award.  Other film work includes A Piece of America (Clermont-Ferrand International Short Film Festival) and the Noah Buschel scribed You’re Gonna Feel Funny After (Charlotte Film Festival, Zero Film Festival).

Mulligan’s extensive commercial client list includes Bravo TV, Kraft, Sony Ericsson, and American Express.  Recently, he shot a first-of-it’s-kind live in-cinema ad for Daffy’s at the Ziegfeld theater in New York.  The commercial-turned-live-event caused a huge buzz in the advertising world and was featured in the New York Times and Boards Magazine.  Mulligan has shot music videos for musical artists such as Passion Pit, Mute Math, Flying Lotus, and Woodhands (his video for “I Wasn’t Made For Fighting” was an official selection of Slamdance 2009 and The 49th Annual Krakow Film Festival).

Mulligan has just concluded principal photography on the narrative feature I’m Not Me (imnotmethemovie.com).  The film will mark the cinematographer's debut as a writer and director.

Obselidia... Visually, the picture is a thing of great beauty. Zak Mulligan's lensing with the Red camera system is shimmeringly luminous as well as vigorously agile and was a deserved recipient of the Sundance cinematography award.”

-Todd McCarthy, Variety

“Zak Mulligan’s cinematography is the strongest formal element in the movie. Bell reveals both a nicely understated compositional eye and an ability to locate soft, surreal touches on the margins.”

-Patrick Z. McGavin

"Obselidia... a gorgeous work in which every frame has the appearance of having been hand-crafted in an art studio"

-Todd McCarthy, Variety

“When I first talked to Zak, I told him I needed someone who could find the picture that was in my head - well, he didn't just find it again and again, he often found an even better one!”

-Diane Bell, Writer / Director of Obselidia
